SpeechEasy (Seed Stage) was a mobile app targeting Selective Mutism, an anxiety disorder that causes toddlers not to be able to speak in certain social situations. Being one of the only Selective Mutism apps created, SpeechEasy is a fun, yet informative way for children with this disorder, to practice their speaking skills through a variety of targeted games and exercises. Through SpeechEasy, we are creating a platform where children with Selective Mutism can openly and freely practice their speech skills in various environments and settings. Our goal, through this app, is to instill confidence within our users, hoping to give them speaking skills and practices that would set the stage for the rest of their speaking careers. Collaborated with 3 other team members.
Tongue Twister - This feature randomizes a series of confusing sentences and uses voice detection to verify the accuracy of the user’s words. Tongue twisters are often used as a form of speech therapy and can be very effective, as they help identify specific difficulties in sounds in a playful manner.
Map Speech Prompter - This feature allows the user to practice their speech in different environments that could potentially be triggering. When the user reaches a location, the app will direct them to practice relevant conversations depending on the location. For example, if the user goes to a grocery store such as Trader Joe’s the app will track their location until they reach the store. Once they reach the store, the user will be given a speaking challenge and the app will check the accuracy and precision of the user’s words. This way, the app enables the user to practice speaking in unfamiliar environments, a key problem for children with selective mutism.
